Darren Gibson

Artistic Director & TBC Director

Co- artistic Director/Director of the Dance Department for Broadway Theatre Project (BTP) and Artistic Director of BTP2, Darren Gibson grew up in New York where he was discovered by Eliot Feld. Darren proclaimed by Feld to have a “…technique, which is prodigious but extraordinarily modest” soon became the first student to graduate from The New Ballet School (known now as Ballet Tech) into Eliot’s company, in which Darren worked as Principle dancer and Ballet Master. Before the end of his time with Eliot’s company Darren would serve on the Board of Directors for Ballet Tech. In addition to his work with Eliot, Darren also attended The High School of Performing Arts. Since then Darren has accumulated numerous ballet credits, staged ballets for Richmond Ballet and Boston Ballet, and assisted Ann Reinking in an original work for the American Ballet Theatre. Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times would eventually recognize Darren as a top ten male dancer on multiple occasions. In addition to his Ballet related credits, Darren has also been involved extensively in musical theatre work. Darren appeared as a featured performer in both the New York Shakespeare Festival production and Broadway revival of On the Town directed by George C. Wolfe, in which he acted as dance captain and danced “The Lonely Town” pas de deux. Darren again played the dual role of featured performer/dance captain when he worked directly with Ann Reinking, Debra McWaters, and Gwen Verdon in the National and European tours of the musical Fosse. Darren would later become a featured performer and resident director/choreographer in London’s West End Production of Fosse. Other credits include the Broadway production of The Look of Love, City Center Encores: House of Flowers, No Strings!, and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular. Darren was last seen performing in the Broadway Production of Twyla Tharp’s Movin’ Out, however, he would later act as dance supervisor for London’s West End production of this same show. Darren now resides in Austin, Texas where he is the Education Director for TexARTS academy and Director for the TexARTS Broadway Company. His work at TexARTS includes choreographing and directing musicals and ballets, the TexARTS production of the Nutcracker being the most recent. Darren is also proud to be a member of the Texas State University Musical Theatre Department where he teaches dance.
